The territorial cluster and the impact on the territory

EcoeFISHent project aims to demonstrate systemic solutions for eco-efficient territorial deployment by creating a multilevel replicable circular socio-economic and sustainable cluster for interconnecting blue and green-economy. The project focuses on a geographically cohesive area in the North West of Italy corresponding to the Ligurian Sea and Central and Northern Tyrrhenian Sea, extending to Piedmont and Lombardy. Although the main center is the Liguria region, the cluster’s geographic extension overlaps with the historical trans-regional “industrial triangle” linking the cities of Genoa, Milan and Turin.

This Industrial symbiosis systemic approach connects active players and main stakeholders in all sectors of the blue and green economy to set up a self-consistent, robust and resilient territorial ecosystem. EcoeFISHent circular economic concept is based on the EcoeFISHent Pre-processing pilot Unit (EPPU) by Themis patented Technology, which enables a concrete and feasible solution for the recycling of aquaculture and fishing side streams. Through this technology, EcoeFISHent will address the environmental challenge aiming to reduce the biomass wasted by 90%, also accounting for the BSF (Black Soldier Fly) larvae breeding bioconversion of further processing of Fish Processing Side-streams. The implementation and recycling of Eco-FISH-box will moreover revolutionize the Fish & Fishing Industry packaging market by replacing non-biodegradable and non-recyclable EPS FOAM. In addition, EcoeFISHent will enable a concrete and feasible solution for recycling in the aquaculture and fishing industry by providing an economic environmental sustainable systemic solution to recycle end-of-life fishing nets towards a zero-waste solution.

EcoeFISHent Circular Industrial Symbiosis Systemic Approach (CISSA) aims at creating industrial symbiosis to connect public and private stakeholders within the EcoeFISHent multilevel territorial circular socio-economic and environmental cluster. The cluster contains three types of connections:

  1. Vertical – between provider and manufacturer along the value chain;
  2. Horizontal – between manufacturers of complementary products;
  3. Institutional connection – between companies and public institutions.

This three-dimensional network will enable connecting several actors, belonging to different sectors and organization types such as SMEs, large industries, scientific and innovator communities; government financial intermediaries; civil society, including citizens and NGOs in order to set a socio-economic and environmental circular system. This approach will lead to integrating expertise and tools in a geographically coherent area to exploit the economic, environmental and social opportunities given by the cluster development. The participation of the Financial Agency of Liguria Region “FILSE(Finanziaria Ligure per lo Sviluppo Economico) as Project Coordinator ensures a strong circular governance model providing concrete opportunities for sustainable economic growth and social improvements. FILSE will promote and implement improvement programs and actions aimed at attracting productive public/private investments by creating an international network of potential investors. Furthermore, FILSE will develop a Circular Economy Action Plan for the Liguria region and neighboring territories involved in the territorial cluster within the project.
