Italian Cosmetics Industry Embraces Sustainability… And EcoeFISHent Is Part of the Change

The latest report from Cosmetica Italia confirms a growing commitment to sustainable practices across the Italian cosmetics sector. EcoeFISHent is proud to contribute to this transformation.

The second edition of the Observatory on Sustainability in the Italian Cosmetics Sector, promoted by Cosmetica Italia in collaboration with Ergo (a spin-off of Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna di Pisa), highlights how the industry is accelerating its efforts in ecodesign, emissions reduction, sustainable packaging, and responsible supply chain management.
According to the report, 6% of the sector’s turnover is invested in research and innovation, with sustainability and innovation identified as two key pillars for future development.
“The path towards an ESG strategy involves every part of the cosmetics supply chain and is a key element for future growth,” said Benedetto Lavino, President of Cosmetica Italia.

EcoeFISHent’s Contribution to Sustainable Cosmetics

EcoeFISHent aligns perfectly with this industry-wide shift. Our EU-funded project extracts valuable bioactive compounds from fish side streams, transforming what was once waste into premium ingredients for cosmetic applications.
Our partner Ardes, based in Genoa (Italy), develops the final skincare products, creating high-quality creams from these sustainably sourced marine ingredients.
This circular approach embodies exactly what the Observatory identifies as a priority: ecodesign and the development of products with environmental sustainability criteria.

EcoeFISHent is not alone in driving change. The project Prismamed 2 is also contributing to sustainable cosmetics by developing biodegradable microbeads for scrubs, made from crushed bivalve shells, a natural alternative to plastic microbeads.
Together, these EU-funded initiatives demonstrate how Blue Economy and circular economy principles can reshape the cosmetics industry.
