The European Commission has highlighted EcoeFISHent as a Green Deal Success Story, recognising its innovative contribution to building a circular and sustainable blue economy.
The project is transforming underutilised materials from the fishing and aquaculture industries into high-value products, including food supplements, cosmetic ingredients, biodegradable packaging, and soil enhancers, through six Circular Value Chains (CVCs).
A key breakthrough comes from a patented microbial stabilisation technology that preserves the quality of unsorted fish side streams (such as bones, heads, skins, and viscera), avoiding the need for costly manual sorting. This innovation enables the safe storage, transport, and processing of nutrient-rich biomass that would otherwise go to waste.
By scaling up advanced biotechnological processes, from enzyme-based extraction to ultrafiltration and dehydration, EcoeFISHent is demonstrating how science and collaboration can turn marine waste into valuable, market-ready resources.
