CVC 5 – From soil to soil: Eco-design and production of fish crates
Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is widely used in packaging and in fish packaging boxes. Due to missing of an efficient circular value chain, it is also commonly found as marine litter on our coastlines and in the oceans, thus representing a dramatic environmental, social and economic problem. The Expanded Sintered Polystyrene used for fish crates is instead regarded as non-recyclable due to its contamination with the organic matter deriving from the fish industry.
To replace this non-recyclable material, the EcoeFISHent project engages in the production of eco-fish boxes made of Expanded Poly Lactic Acid derived by Agri-side-streams.

Among the EcoeFISHent targets, a strong carbon footprint reduction should be reached thanks to:
- the use of an innovative (patented) shape that allow a more efficient and space-saving piling-up during transport & fishing activities
- the Italian localized EPLA molding and fish box production in agreement of the dutch patent holder
- the on site post-use E-boxes processing for the fast achievement of side-streams’ space strong reduction and finally to achieve a qualified soil improved.
The eco-FISH-boxes end of life will be managed through bioconversion within the cluster to obtain soil improver for agriculture closing the loop from-soil-to soil.
