EcoeFISHent is a strategic project of great importance at the European and local levels, aimed at protecting the environment and promoting sustainable growth in the fishing sector through the development of circular economy models. It is one of only four projects approved out of the 92 submitted in response to the latest European Call Horizon 2020 – Green Deal. The project is worth 15 million Euros and involves 34 partners, including institutions, research centers, and leading companies in the fisheries and circular economy sectors from across Europe.
“As FILSE, the financial institution of the Liguria Region, we are very proud to lead this project. EcoeFISHent represents a significant opportunity for economic and sustainable development, posing a challenge for Europe with far-reaching impacts on the involved territories. Liguria counts the majority of project partners and it will be at the center of a European cluster which will be focused on developing new supply chains based on circular economy principles and the valorization of the industrial fish sector,” says Lorenzo Cuocolo, President of FILSE.
Supported by international research centers and leading companies in the fish sector, EcoeFISHent is pioneering innovative technologies and processes to produce cosmetics, nutraceuticals, and packaging derived from fish waste. Furthermore, the project includes a marine environment protection program, which entails the collection, recovery, and recycling of abandoned fishing nets and the implementation of a sustainable fishing program in the Ligurian territory. The expected outcome will serve as a development model for the fish sector, allowing its replicability in Italy and in other European and non-European countries as well.
