The transformation of fish waste from a problem to a valuable resource is at the forefront of EcoeFISHent’s objectives. Historically, the fisheries industry has generated significant amounts of byproducts during the processing of fish – with skin, bones and other remnants often discarded. However, recent advancements reveal that these byproducts hold immense potential.
Leading this charge is Kjersti Lian of Nofima: our common initiative seeks to develop innovative solutions to repurpose fish waste, turning what was once seen as waste into valuable ingredients with notable health benefits. The project is particularly focused on extracting collagen and other proteins, which can be utilized in cosmetics and food packaging – thereby promoting a circular economy.
